![]() The Island Trials are the supposed main quest (even if Ash is really far from being motivated to do it compared to past badge quests), and yet most of the Totem Pokémon appearences so far treat the Totems as if they were incidental elements to the plot,as if they didn't deserve the importance, and as a result it feels like Ash is more stumbling into the main quest over undertaking it: it wouldn't be a problem if this was by design and Ash was more interested in having fun at the school, but the show made a point of having Ash say he wants to take on the trials, so this is just a weird disconnect. My main issue is mostly with what this episode says about Ash's role in this series. ![]() ![]() The old man was also quite quirky and fun to see, and Lana was amazing as usual. ![]() I also liked that Lana officially got her own Z-Ring now, and hope Mallow and Sophocles can eventually obtain their own too. While as a Pokémon battle this match is not that great, as an action scene it definitely delivers, with a lot of close calls and everyone doing their best towards Totem Wishiwashi (and the Ally Alomomola), with a great finishing move with Popplio's Aqua Jet. An episode I'm fairly split on: it's far from bad, but what this says for the way this series will approach trials going forward leaves me a bit worried for some other elements.įirst of all, this was a great Lana episode, and in spite of a few close calls that seemed to make Ash into too much of a butt monkey again he showed pretty well his own proficiency and helped out in a nice way. ![]()
